Let's talk about Web & Android
Since launch, the most frequently asked question we’ve received is: "Where's Web & Android"? In our 2023 annual update, “What’s next for Dex in 2024?”, we shared our plans to expand Dex to both platforms. A few months later, in September 2024, we followed up with “What About Web & Android?”, detailing the major infrastructure changes underway and our roadmap for Web and Android.
Today, Pedro — founder of Dexbit, the company behind Dex — is here to share where things stand and when you can expect more updates.
Where Things Stand
While we had aimed to launch Dex for Web and Android in Early Access by the end of March… well, it’s April now — and if we were ready, we wouldn’t be writing this update. The truth is: we’re not there yet.
Most products in the space rush to release something, anything really, just to say they’re available in said platforms, even if it means delivering a subpar experience. That’s never been the case with Dex nor will it ever be. From day one, Dex has been the premier destination for Pokémon TCG collectors on Apple platforms, and we’re committed to bringing that same level of quality to both Web and Android.
That doesn’t mean we have “almost ready” versions waiting in the wings, we don’t. We’re taking the time to build things right, step by step, until we’re confident they meet the standards we’ve set.
With that said, our current target is to release Dex on Web in Early Access in June, potentially even a bit earlier. Android will follow shortly after.
It’s important to note that, due to the nature of it being released in early access, some major features, specifically Folders and the Scanner, won’t be available at launch. That doesn’t mean they won't be available ever, they’re just not part of the initial rollout and will be released later in the year.
Behind the Scenes
With the update out of the way, I’m excited to give you a first look at what the team has been working on! While there’s still plenty left to build, we’ve already reached near feature parity with our current website. The Dex, Expansions, and Search tabs are now fully functional on both the Web and Android app.
Here are a few screenshots from the Web version:
…and of course, we’ve got some from Android as well:
We’re also introducing a fresh new list mode for expansions, featuring vibrant backgrounds inspired by iconic cards from each set. It’s a small touch, but one we think adds a lot of personality. Take a sneak peak:
As mentioned earlier, there are still plenty of little details to refine — but what you’re seeing are real screenshots, running on real devices, not design mockups. So yes, there are some rough edges — but we’re working on it.
Next up is integrating user data: things like your theme and avatar settings, your owned cards, and more. Once that’s in place, we'll be able to track our collections and mark cards as owned across Web and Android. After that, we’ll focus on polishing everything for the Early Access release and getting Dex in your hands!
That’s all for now — more updates are coming as we move forward. On a personal note, I’m also getting ready to become a dad in the next few days or weeks (who knows at this point!). But don’t worry — I’m not going anywhere. I’ll still be around, just… probably a bit sleep-deprived 💤
Until next time, Pedro 👋
